Book about the castle

A book detailing the history of the Bethlen–Rákóczi Castle in Gyimesbükk is also available for purchase in our gift shop, allowing visitors to take the exhibition’s contents home with them. Based on authentic archival and cartographic sources and research, the book contains numerous further interesting facts about the castle, the settlement and the centuries of the Gyimes Pass. 

The chronology traces the castle’s history from its construction in 1626 right through to the completion of its reconstruction in 2026. The pages of the volume bring to life the world of border defence in the era of Gábor Bethlen and the Rákóczi family, highlighting the castle’s strategic importance and the special role played by the Gyimes Pass as a customs post and a health quarantine station. With the aid of contemporary military maps and rare archival photographs, the reader is taken on a journey back in time.
